  • Special law discussed to prevent Seoul army intervention in politics

    SEOUL, July ELEVEN (UPI) — Discussions are underway to create a different law that forbids army squaddies to intrude in political actions in South Korea.

    A defense ministry supply told journalists Wednesday the Safeguard Ministry is drawing up a special regulation that will mandate the military’s neutral standing in politics, in step with Yonhap.

    The discussion comes amid controversy following the disclosure of an army document that states its plan for a crackdown on demonstrators who participated in candlelight vigils to protest former President Park Geun-hye.

    The document detailed plans for mentioning martial legislation and mobilizing military troops and resources.

    The different regulation, discussed as part of the army’s reformative plan, will include measures for punishing officials who order an intervention in political actions and establishing the suitable for lower-rating officials to not follow such orders.
