Angela Merkel attempted to avoid a political minefield this week when a member of her Social Democrat (SPD) coalition called for a gender-neutral version of the national anthem.<\/h2>\n

\u201cDeutschlandlied\u201d made global headlines in 2017 when the United States Tennis Association accidentally played a taboo verse of the song not used since World War II. The song made news again on Monday with a letter released to the media by Equality Commissioner Kristin Rose-M\u00f6hring.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t we make our national anthem gender sensitive?\u201d Ms. Rose-M\u00f6hring wrote, the U.K. Telegraph reported. \u201cIt wouldn\u2019t hurt, would it?\u201d<\/p>\n

The official\u2019s plan includes replacing the words \u201cfatherland\u201d with \u201chomeland\u201d and \u201cbrotherly\u201d with \u201ccourageous.\u201d<\/p>\n

A gender-neutral change would follow Canada\u2019s lead, which recently altered \u201cO Canada\u201d to include the lyrics \u201cin all of us command\u201d instead of \u201ctrue patriot love in all your sons command.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steffen Seibert, a spokesman for Ms. Merkel, quickly released a statement saying, \u201cthe chancellor is very happy with our nice national anthem as it is in its traditional form and doesn\u2019t see any need for change,\u201d the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n
