Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says he\u2019s confident that U.S. talks with North Korea will resume \u201csometime in the next week.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pompeo says he doesn\u2019t know the exact timing. Speaking in Seoul, he says he expects it to happen fairly quickly after he and the North Koreans return to their nations. Pompeo returns late Thursday to the U.S.<\/p>\n
He says President Donald Trump is \u201cin the lead\u201d but that \u201cI will be the person who takes the role of driving this process forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
He says much more work has been done by the U.S. and North Korean that couldn\u2019t be encapsulated in the Trump-Kim Jong Un statement. So he says teams will now work to make more progress on those items.<\/p>\n

He says he won\u2019t disclose specific timelines but that the administration is hopeful that \u201cmajor, major disarmament\u201d steps can occur before the end of Trump\u2019s first term. The term ends in January 2021.<\/p>\n
Pompeo is also urging skepticism after North Korean official media said Trump had agreed to a step-by-step approach to denuclearization. Pompeo isn\u2019t being specific but says that \u201cone should heavily discount some things that are written in other places.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Pompeo tells reporters that it\u2019s silly to focus on the lack of the word \u201cverifiable.\u201d He says that\u2019s because the agreement does refer to \u201ccomplete\u201d denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Pompeo says that \u201cin the minds of everyone concerned,\u201d the word \u201ccomplete\u201d encompasses \u201cverifiable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pompeo says: \u201cI am equally confident they understand that there will be in-depth verification.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pompeo is in South Korea a day after President Donald Trump met with Kim Jong Un and announced the U.S. would freeze what he called \u201cwar games\u201d with North Korea.<\/p>\n
Pompeo says he was there when Trump talked about it with Kim. He says Trump \u201cmade very clear\u201d that the condition for the freeze was that good-faith talks continue. He says if the U.S. concludes they no longer are in good faith, the freeze \u201cwill no longer be in effect.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pompeo says Trump was \u201cunambiguous\u201d in conveying that to Kim.<\/p>\n

House Speaker Paul Ryan says President Donald Trump should be \u201capplauded\u201d for his meeting with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un. But Ryan is cautioning on Wednesday that the next steps toward an agreement won\u2019t go fast.<\/p>\n
The Wisconsin Republican, who is retiring this year, told reporters that \u201cThe president needed to disrupt the status quo, and the president has disrupted the status quo\u201d with the historic meeting in Singapore. He said \u201cthe president should be applauded\u2026.Now let\u2019s go get an agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump and Kim signed a joint statement that contained a repeat of past promises to work toward a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, but the details haven\u2019t been nailed down.<\/p>\n

Russia is welcoming the outcome of the summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.<\/p>\n
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says \u201cone can only welcome the fact that such a meeting took place and that direct dialogue was begun.\u201d<\/p>\n
Peskov tells reporters in Moscow on Wednesday that the meeting helps de-escalate tensions and push the situation away \u201cfrom the critical point where it was just a few months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
Peskov says the meeting confirms Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s view that \u201cthere is no alternative to political and diplomatic means in solving the problem of the Korean Peninsula.\u201d<\/p>\n
Peskov adds, however, that given how complicated the situation is around North Korea, the Kremlin isn\u2019t expecting a quick resolution.<\/p>\n
